WASHINGTON A public health alert has been issued for Perdues frozen ready-to-eat chicken breast tenders labeled gluten-free over concerns of small pieces of plastic and blue dye, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Tuesday.

A recall was not issued for the product since it is no longer available to purchase, according to the USDAs Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The following frozen chicken products, produced on July 12, 2022, are affected by the alert: 42-ounce plastic bags of Purdue Chicken Breast Tenders Gluten Free with a Best if Used By date of July 12, 2023, and a lot number of 2193 above the use by date.

Affected products will have the establishment number P-33944 underneath the Best if Used By date on the back of the package. These products, according to the FSIS, were shipped to BJs Wholesale Club retail locations across the country.

So far, the USDA says there have been no confirmed reports of injuries or adverse reactions from anyone eating the product.

The FSIS encourages anyone with the affected product to throw it away or return it to where it was purchased.

Perdue Chicken Tenders: Usda Issues Public Health Alert For Potential Plastic Pieces

WASHINGTON – U.S. food safety officials are warning the public about some of Purdues frozen, ready-to-eat chicken tenders that may contain plastic pieces.

The U.S. Department of Agricultures Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert on Tuesday about the product, Perdues chicken breast tenders that are labeled gluten-free. It said the product may be contaminated “with extraneous materials, specifically small pieces of clear plastic and blue dye.”

The issue was first discovered when a customer reported that a chicken tender had a small piece of clear plastic and blue dye inside it. Purdue then reported the potential contamination to the Food Safety and Inspection Service, officials said.

A recall was not issued for the product since it is no longer available to purchase, according to the USDAs Food Safety and Inspection Service.

How car recalls get reported

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration officially start car recalls after receiving complaints from consumers.

The impacted chicken breast tenders were produced on July 12, 2022, and have the following information:

• 42 oz. plastic bags containing “PERDUE CHICKEN BREAST TENDERS GLUTEN FREE” with a “Best if Used By: 07 12 23” and a lot number of 2193 above the use by date.

Usda Issues Public Health Alert For Frozen Perdue Gluten

— The USDA has issued an alert for Perdue’s frozen ready-to-eat chicken breast tenders labeled gluten free.

The agency said the product may contain small pieces of clear plastic and blue dye.

The 42-ounce plastic bags of chicken tenders from the Salisbury-based company were produced on July 12 and have the “best if used by” date of July 12, 2023.

They were shipped to BJ’s Wholesale Clubs nationwide, and while the stores no long sell them, some people could already have the product in their freezers

There have been no reports of injuries.

Still, the USDA says you should not eat the tenders.

Instead, the bag should be thrown away or returned to the store.

Perdue Foods Recalls Gluten

On May 31, Perdue Foods recalled 31,703 pounds of chicken, including refrigerated, fully cooked gluten-free breaded organic chicken tenders under the PERDUE® SIMPLY SMART® Organics brand.

According to Perdue Foods, these chicken tenders were recalled because of the potential that the product may contain pieces of bone.

All of the SIMPLY SMART® items, including the gluten-free chick tenders, are no longer in stores and are past their use-by date of May 20, 2019.

The gluten-free product recalled is the PERDUE® SIMPLY SMART® Organics Refrigerated Gluten Free Breaded Chicken Breast Tenders. These items were produced in March 2019 with a Best If Used By Date of 5/20/2019 and UPC product bar code of 072745-001437.

We are committed to producing the highest quality products, therefore, out of an abundance of caution, we have decided to recall all affected products that were produced during the same production run, said Jeff Shaw, Perdues Vice President of Food Safety and Quality, in a press release.

If you have any of the refrigerated PERDUE® SIMPLY SMART® Organics brand packages, do not consume the product and contact Perdue Foods at 866-866-3703 for a full refund of your purchase.

In January 2019, more than 68,000 pounds of Perdue gluten-free chicken nuggets were recalled due to possible wood contamination, according to the USDA.

Perdue Foods Voluntarily Withdraws Perdue Gluten Free Chicken Breast Tenders

Salisbury, Md. Perdue Foods LLC has voluntarily withdrawn frozen fully cooked PERDUE® Gluten Free Chicken Breast Tenders with a Best If Used By Date of 07/12/23 and a UPC Bar Code of 0-72745-83492-9 because a foreign material was identified in a minimal amount of consumer packages. The withdrawn product was distributed exclusively through BJs club stores.

There have been no reports of injury or illness associated with this product.

We determined the source of the material to be blue ink and a small piece of plastic from an ink pen cartridge that was inadvertently introduced into the raw material before the tenders were breaded, said Jeff Shaw, Senior Vice President of Food Safety and Quality for Perdue. This likely resulted in a few packages that potentially contain the substance however, out of an abundance of caution, we decided to voluntarily withdraw all packages of tenders produced on the day of the incident.
